[NOTE. -- Paul Stubbs & Blandine Longre]

[NOTE. William Sydney Graham, born in Scotland in 1918 and deceased in Cornwall in 1986, was one of the major British poets of the 20th century, and from 1949 found a noteworthy champion in T.S. Eliot, then poetry editor at Faber and Faber, the press that would publish all of Graham’s poetry from his third collection onwards. Close to writers such as Dylan Thomas and Edwin Morgan and to various artists, Graham devoted himself almost exclusively to poetry, leading a life of extreme poverty. This selection (with an introduction by Michael Snow, a close friend of Graham, whose literary estate he had been bequeathed, and with an afterword by the British poet Paul Stubbs) gathers together poems translated into French for the first time, along with an essay by W.S. Graham on his poetry. This bilingual book presents an overview of the work of a writer of rare originality, an explorer of a language with which he was both friend and foe. Judged sometimes to be too “difficult” a poet, and consequently overlooked when alive, Graham’s reputation has nevertheless increased steadily since his death, a fact confirmed by the publication of his New Collected Poems in 2004 (Faber and Faber) and by this first selection of his poems into French. -- Paul Stubbs & Blandine Longre]
